The Mountain Moved the Finish Line

An ultramarathon medic discovers the mountain is moving the race route to keep one competitor from reaching the summit. The runner she must save insists he has been there before.

How it begins

The finish line had moved while Sana was treating a blister.

This was inconvenient for several reasons.

The medals were at the old finish.

The ambulance was at the old finish.

The race director had just announced a course record from the old finish.

Across the valley, the red banner now hung between two trees three hundred meters higher.

Sana checked the map.

Then the trees.

One of them waved.

Not its branches.

The whole tree.

She put the map away.

A runner beside her swore softly.

"You've seen this before," she said.

He did not deny it quickly enough.

His number identified him as Leo Marsh. Experienced. Medically cleared. Emergency contact left blank.

Sana had been planning to ask about the last detail.

Now she had a more immediate question.

"Where is the mountain trying to send you?"

Leo looked toward the new finish line.

"Away."

From the race radio came the director's voice.

All medical staff remain at assigned positions.

Sana pressed the transmit button.

"My assigned position is walking uphill."

Silence.

Then: Please clarify.

The ground beneath the first-aid tent shifted.

Sana watched a packet of dressings slide toward a stone that had not been there a minute earlier.

"I'd rather you clarified."

Leo removed his race watch.

He had been wearing it over an old scar.

At the edge of the path, a small metal marker emerged from the soil.

RESCUE ROUTE CLOSED.

Sana knelt beside it.

The closure date was sixteen years old.

Leo stood very still.

"Who closed this?"

He looked at the finish line.

The banner had turned, although there was no wind.

"You need to stop the race," he said.

Sana took out her radio.

This time she did not ask for clarification.

Behind them, the mountain settled one careful step closer to the path.
