The Dragon's Smallest Debt

A dragon pays an old debt by running the village lost-and-found, where every unclaimed object remembers the person it misses.

How it begins

The dragon offered Ada three rubies and a suspiciously warm sheep.

She accepted neither.

"You owe me a roof tile," she said.

Bram lowered the sheep.

It walked away with the expression of an animal reconsidering several recent decisions.

"The debt is ancient," he said.

"The tile broke on Tuesday."

"To my grandmother."

Ada put down her tea.

Bram unfolded a paper so carefully that she understood, before reading it, that the matter was important to him.

A century earlier, her grandfather had returned a lost dragon egg.

The receipt promised repayment in kind.

Ada looked from the paper to the small green creature standing on her counter.

"I don't have an egg."

"I noticed."

"What can you do?"

Bram straightened.

"Count treasure. Remember names. Keep things warm."

Ada glanced toward the shelves behind her.

Forty-three umbrellas. Nine single gloves. A brass key nobody claimed. Every object waiting for someone who had stopped looking.

"Can you find people?"

"Sometimes."

"Then you can work here."

The dragon considered the office.

It was not impressive. The ceiling leaked beside the kettle. The window looked onto the underside of a bridge. Someone had written LOST THINGS MATTER on the back of a calendar.

"What is the treasure?"

Ada pointed at the shelves.

Bram looked doubtful.

Then a red mitten said, very quietly, I would like to go home.

Ada turned.

The dragon turned with her.

"Did you hear that?" she asked.

Bram nodded.

The mitten shifted on its shelf.

He hasn't come back from the north road.

Outside, the village clock struck ten.

Ada reached for her coat.

Bram gathered the mitten between his claws with unexpected care.

"Is this normal office work?"

"Not usually."

"Good," he said.

For the first time since arriving, he looked less like a creature repaying a debt and more like someone who had found a job.
