The Dragon's Guide to Shared Kitchens
A retired dragon rents a room above a communal bakery and cannot stop caramelizing the furniture. A patient baker teaches him to share space without making himself small.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The dragon caramelized the chair during the rental interview.
Only the back legs.
He apologized before Mina noticed.
She looked beneath the table.
The wood had acquired a beautiful amber shine.
"Does that happen often?"
"When I'm nervous."
"Are you often nervous?"
"Recently."
Mina considered the empty room above the bakery, the rent bill beneath the flour tin and the dragon trying to fold his wings into a shape that would inconvenience nobody.
"Can you carry sacks?"
"Yes."
"Do you sing at night?"
"Not well."
"Then we'll get on."
Bramble moved in on a Monday with three books, one copper saucepan and the remains of a heroic career he did not wish to discuss.
By Wednesday, the communal kitchen contained six jars of exceptionally good caramel and a notice asking residents to identify their own butter.
The butter notice had nothing to do with him.
He apologized for it anyway.
On Thursday, Mina found him standing outside the kitchen while everybody else ate supper.
"Why aren't you coming in?"
"It's crowded."
"There are two people."
"They seem comfortable."
She looked past him.
One resident was reading the paper. The other was arguing with a potato.
Mina took a bowl from the shelf and handed it to him.
"What do you know about dough?"
"Mostly that it burns."
"We'll start earlier in the process."
He held the bowl with elaborate care.
At the table, the potato argument paused.
Nobody moved away.
Mina mixed flour and water, then asked Bramble to warm the edge of the bowl.
A small amber light appeared between his claws.
The dough rose.
For a moment he forgot to look sorry.
Upstairs, the new chair in his room creaked as the building settled around it.
Mina heard the sound and smiled.
It had been a long time since the bakery had made room for something that was not another bill.

Develop this idea
A cozy-fantasy dragon-bakery idea becomes warm through specific shared work. Give Bramble a useful ability and a genuine difficulty, while Mina needs something beyond the pleasure of rescuing him. Kitchen rules can create low-stakes conflict without making every neighbor a villain. Your version could use another communal business, with a climax that requires several people rather than one spectacular spell. Let belonging mean making room for a difference, not training the unusual character to vanish.
