The Captain Learns Sorry
A professional hockey captain takes a silent retreat and falls for the sign-language teacher hired to help him apologize to his brother.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The hockey captain had been silent for four minutes when he broke the retreat's most important rule.
He pointed at the biscuit tin and mouthed, Sponsor?
Lucy pushed the tin toward him.
"No," she said. "Oats."
Nathan Scott looked relieved enough to take three.
The retreat brochure had promised silence, reflection and a place beyond public performance. His arrival had brought a photographer, two suitcases and a man who used the phrase personal growth as if it were a product launch.
Lucy had sent the photographer away.
The man had taken longer.
Now Nathan sat across from her in a classroom overlooking the lake, trying to learn how to say sorry without using his voice.
She signed the phrase slowly.
He copied her.
Close enough to understand, not close enough to stop practicing.
"Who are you speaking to?" she asked.
He hesitated.
Then he wrote on the small whiteboard.
My brother.
Lucy waited.
The wind pushed a branch against the window. Downstairs, someone was discovering that silence did not prevent a kettle from being irritating.
Nathan erased the words.
He wrote something else.
He doesn't want an apology video.
"That sounds reasonable."
Nathan looked up sharply, as if she had broken an agreement he had made with everyone except her.
Lucy set the board between them.
"This isn't a video."
"I know."
"And learning the signs doesn't purchase a response."
"I know that too."
She watched his hands settle on the table.
They were large, scarred and unexpectedly careful.
"Then we can start."
His phone vibrated beside the biscuit tin.
A message preview lit the screen.
Need a shot of you learning. Just hands if necessary.
Nathan read it.
Lucy reached for the tin.
"If the biscuits become sponsored," she said, "the lesson is over."
For the first time, his smile did not look prepared.
He turned the phone off.
Then he asked her to show him the phrase again.
