ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

The ocean had left its bottle.

Tessa stood before the empty display case while the security guard explained that nobody had entered the gallery.

"Nobody?"

"Not even the cleaners."

"That's not reassuring."

The bottle was still there.

So was the stopper.

Inside, where a miniature blue sea had rolled against a silver horizon for eighty-seven years, lay one damp grain of sand.

Tessa had become curator because she loved things that could not be hurried. Tides. Coral. The slow correction of a misleading label.

This morning, everything seemed to require immediate attention.

Her phone vibrated.

Harbor authority.

Then the mayor.

Then a photograph from her sister showing fishing boats leaning on mud beneath a pier that should have been floating.

The sea outside was disappearing too.

Tessa called Hugo Bell.

He had built ships before the city became interested in displaying them instead of using them. He arrived wearing boots that had survived several administrations.

He looked at the bottle.

Then at the stopper.

"Who opened this?"

"Nobody."

"Then who closed it?"

Tessa frowned.

Hugo lifted the stopper with a cloth.

Beneath its brass rim was a new scratch.

The museum's records described the object as decorative.

Hugo described it with a word Tessa would not have put on a label.

"It's a transfer valve."

"To where?"

"Depends what they connected it to."

From the harbor came the sound of an alarm.

Tessa imagined miles of exposed seabed, stranded boats, creatures whose world was vanishing while she stood inside a building that had charged admission to a captive piece of it.

She read the old label.

The Ocean, Acquired 1939.

No name.

No permission.

No explanation.

Hugo wrapped the stopper in the cloth.

"If you find it," he asked, "are you putting it back in the bottle?"

Tessa looked at the empty case.

For the first time in her career, the answer was easy.

"No."
