The Ferry Only Carries Exes
A ferry captain joins a reunion sailing and discovers every passenger once dated the guest of honor. A quiet marine electrician helps her turn the accidental spectacle into a voyage about the futures people can choose after being badly described.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Rachel Stone understood the reunion invitation when the fourth bouquet arrived with the same apology.
Lovely to see you again. No hard feelings.
She looked down the ferry's red rail. Five people held flowers. Three wore expressions she recognized from the last months of her own relationship with the guest of honor.
"Oh," she said.
Beside her, a man kneeling at an open service panel looked up.
"Electrical problem?"
"More historical."
David Cole stood, closing the panel before anyone could trip over it. His shirt carried the small embroidered name of the marine maintenance firm. He had a pencil behind one ear and none of the nervous flowers.
Rachel liked him immediately for both reasons.
The captain sounded the departure announcement from the wheelhouse. Rachel had been invited aboard as a guest, a distinction she intended to protect after twenty years of people assuming she would take charge whenever water appeared.
At the front of the salon, her former partner tapped a microphone.
"A few old friends," he began.
A woman near the lifejacket cabinet laughed once, sharply.
Rachel looked along the flowers again.
"How many?" David asked quietly.
"I suspect all of us."
He followed her gaze, then glanced toward the snack counter.
"There's coffee behind the crew hatch. Proper cups. You can stand there without being visible from the microphone."
"Is that a standard maintenance service?"
"Only when the public-address system becomes the more serious fault."
Rachel smiled despite herself.
The ferry eased away from the quay. Beyond the windows, familiar water opened beneath a pale sky. She knew every marker in the channel and almost nothing useful about the life waiting after this afternoon.
David moved a coil of cable so she could pass.
In the salon, another passenger set down her bouquet and raised a hand.
"Before the speeches," she called, "could someone explain why my name card says inspirational chapter?"
Rachel stopped beside the crew hatch.
"Actually," she said, "I may want to hear this."
