ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

Faye lost her anger between the sponsor's logo and the first question.

A man in a velvet jacket had just suggested that public libraries should charge by adjective.

Normally, she would have enjoyed him.

She would have leaned forward, allowed a small, lethal pause, then made the audience feel that the future depended on disliking his face.

Instead, she wondered whether he had eaten.

"You look tired," she said.

Behind the camera, Robin closed his eyes.

The man touched his jacket.

"Excuse me?"

"There's soup backstage."

Someone in the audience laughed. Not the sharp little laugh that meant a clip would travel. A confused, almost grateful sound.

Her earpiece crackled.

Faye, please attack the proposal.

She looked at the sponsor's illuminated slogan: FEEL SOMETHING THAT MATTERS.

"I don't think he means it," she said.

The man in velvet swallowed.

A technician began playing the emergency applause.

Three minutes later, Faye stood beside a stack of branded water bottles while Robin read her contract from his phone.

"Six expressions of moral urgency," he said. "Two direct challenges. One moment of visible disbelief."

"I did disbelieve him."

"You offered him lunch."

He was not angry either. That made the situation worse.

Her phone filled with messages from the agency. They had sold her indignation through Friday. A furniture brand had already built a campaign around the phrase absolutely unacceptable.

Beyond the temporary wall, the man in velvet was eating soup.

He looked smaller.

Faye tried to summon the familiar heat. She pictured every person who had told her to calm down, every meeting she had lost by being pleasant.

Nothing.

Robin watched her for a long moment.

"What can you feel?"

Faye looked at the technician sharing his sandwich with a security guard.

"Relief," she said.

Robin scrolled to the cancellation clause.

"That," he said, "is going to be expensive."

Develop this idea

This social-media satire starts with a professional skill becoming emotionally impossible. Make Faye good at her work before showing its cost. Her missing anger should expose relationships built on performance, while a genuine complaint prevents the novel from dismissing all outrage as foolish. Develop a concrete live event with deadlines, contracts and an audience whose reactions vary. Your version could follow another emotion sold as a service. Give sincerity consequences, including people who do not find it charming.

  1. Faye loses her anger during a sponsored argument
  2. Sponsors demand a replacement emotional performance
  3. Robin suggests a week of public delight
  4. Their first sincere broadcast embarrasses a major client
  5. Faye discovers that audience complaints are being manufactured
  6. A genuine grievance arrives without a marketable villain
  7. Robin refuses to turn the complainant into a spectacle
  8. Faye breaks her exclusivity contract to show the whole story
  9. The audience funds a practical repair instead of another argument
  10. Faye learns to work without being furious on command
Characters
  • Faye Mercer, 33. Outrage coach who loses the anger her sponsors purchased
  • Robin Dale, 46. Producer trying to stage an unexpectedly sincere live show
Series possibilities
