How it begins

Leila recognized the man by the way he placed his cup.

Handle turned inward. Left hand free. Nothing near the edge.

Three years ago he had made the same small arrangements in a hotel kitchen while the building above them burned. She remembered his voice more clearly than his face: calm, exact, asking whether she could walk before offering an arm.

Afterward, he disappeared before anyone could ask his name.

Now he occupied table six on the overnight train, reading a menu she had written that afternoon.

She carried out the first course herself.

He looked up.

For a moment the practiced stillness left his face.

“You.”

“Apparently.”

“Are you well?”

“Usually. It depends on the passengers.”

He glanced toward the corridor.

Leila set down the plate.

The dining car moved gently beneath them. Outside, dark fields broke around occasional station lights. She had eight tables to feed, a new assistant to supervise and no spare capacity for a man who made the room feel suddenly like a place with exits.

“Should I be worried?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“About you?”

“About someone traveling with us.”

She did not move closer.

“Tell the conductor.”

“I will.”

“Then do that before you ask me for anything.”

He looked at the plate, then back at her.

There was almost a smile.

“Fair.”

When she returned to the kitchen, a small envelope waited beneath the service bell. No message. Only a photograph of table six taken that morning, before the train had been cleaned.

On the reverse was a time.

Eleven forty.

Leila checked the clock.

Her assistant asked whether the next course was ready.

“Yes,” she said.

She put the photograph inside a clean container and called the conductor.

Then she looked down the length of the dining car toward the man who had once helped her leave a burning room.

This time she intended to know what he was waiting for before anyone decided where she should stand.

Develop this idea

Let the train's routines create constraints through stops, service and shared spaces, without making every member of staff careless. Leila must have a professional life beyond being available to Noah. His earlier rescue does not entitle him to her help. The important disclosure should cost him a useful advantage, allowing trust to grow from an action rather than an impressive account of his intentions.
