The Tiger Who Whispered Thunder
A tiger with a tiny voice discovers his whispers make distant clouds rumble. A patient tortoise helps him tell the village what he needs without turning every quiet request into a very loud weather event.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Tavi was a very large tiger with a very small voice. This made ordering flour difficult.
'Two sacks, please,' he whispered.
'Blue socks?' said the flour seller.
'Flour,' whispered Tavi.
'Four blue socks?'
Tavi shook his head and pointed. Pointing worked for flour. It did not work for everything. He could not point to please close the gate, or I am worried about the bridge, or I would rather have someone sit beside me today. Those things stayed inside his chest, where they felt much bigger than his voice.
On Tuesday, Tavi carried his flour home through the garden. Moss the tortoise was tying beans to sticks. She did this slowly, which gave the beans plenty of time to think about where they wanted to grow.
'Good morning,' Tavi whispered.
Far beyond the hills, thunder rolled.
Moss looked up. The sky above them was clear.
'Good morning,' she said.
'I hope your beans are well,' Tavi whispered.
The thunder rolled again. One bean leaf trembled. A sparrow dropped a twig.
Moss set down her string. 'Could you say something else?'
Tavi thought carefully. He did not want to be rude to the weather.
'I would like a cup of tea.'
The clouds beyond the hills gave an enormous BOOM.
A window opened in the village. Then another. Someone shouted that a storm was coming. Tavi covered his mouth with both paws. He had only wanted tea.
Moss came to stand beside his boot. 'Did you ask the clouds to do that?'
Tavi shook his head.
'Then we had better find out what they heard.'
She took a small notebook from her gardening apron. Tavi watched her write his name at the top. Not TIGER. Not THUNDER. Tavi.
For the first time that morning, he felt a little less large and a little less alone.
