How it begins

Esme found her soulmate between a plumbing complaint and a request to stop a deceased aunt attending Christmas.

The file was blue. It should have been gold.

She checked the number, then the signature, then the man sitting opposite her desk eating the biscuit she had meant to save for lunch.

“There's been a mistake,” she said.

Theo swallowed. “With the biscuit?”

“With us.”

He looked down at the red thread looped around his wrist. Its other end disappeared beneath Esme's sleeve. Yesterday it had brought them together outside a closed pharmacy. They had spent three hours talking in the rain.

She had not told him she worked for the office responsible.

“Are you married?” he asked.

“No.”

“Am I?”

“Not according to this.”

“Good start.”

Esme turned the file so he could see. Their names appeared on adjacent lines, separated by a smear of tea. Someone had copied the second line onto the first.

Theo studied the page.

“Who should I have met?”

“I'm not allowed to disclose that.”

“But you can tell me I shouldn't have met you.”

She touched the thread. It was warm, although warmth proved nothing. The system produced warmth. It also produced favorable coincidences and an unreasonable appetite for romantic music.

Theo pushed the biscuit plate toward her.

“Did you enjoy yesterday?”

Esme thought of him holding a newspaper over the pharmacy's broken sign so she could read the emergency number. Of the way he had asked questions and waited through the answers.

“Yes.”

“Was that in the file?”

“No.”

Outside the office, the morning queue began arguing with a haunted umbrella.

Theo stood.

“Then perhaps we could have coffee somewhere without paperwork.”

Esme looked at the correction stamp in her hand. For the first time since joining the office, she could not decide whether using it would repair the mistake or make one.
