The Expedition to the Bottom of a Teacup
A geologist inspecting an inherited teacup finds a mountain range below its glaze. Her expedition has until the owner's next cup of tea to rescue the people living at the bottom.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Lila saw the mountain range while checking the teacup for a hairline crack.
At first she blamed the glaze. Blue willow patterns often produced accidental landscapes. Then a tiny red flare rose from the highest peak.
She put down the magnifier.
Across the room, her aunt filled the kettle.
“Tea?”
“Not in this one.”
“It was your grandmother's favorite.”
“I think it's occupied.”
A second flare bloomed beneath the glaze.
Lila had spent twelve years studying faults. She knew the difference between decoration and a mountain under strain. Along the painted ridge, a dark line widened.
Something was falling.
She moved the cup beneath her desk lamp.
At its base, too small to read without magnification, stood a row of houses. Smoke rose from one chimney. A road curved toward the handle, where an old repair joined the porcelain with a fine gold seam.
Her aunt turned off the kettle.
“Your grandmother used to leave that one empty.”
“Why?”
“She said it needed air.”
Lila touched the crack with a fingertip.
The room lifted away.
For a moment she felt herself falling through cold light. Then gravel struck her knees.
A man in a red coat hauled her behind a rock.
“Head down.”
Above them, a shadow crossed the valley. The rim of the cup curved around the sky.
Lila stared.
The man pressed a rope into her hand.
“Captain Oren Vale. Can you climb?”
“Yes.”
“Good. The north ridge is going, and the last signaler is still up there.”
Far above, her aunt's face appeared like a changing moon.
“Lila?”
“Don't pour anything!”
Her voice came back from the porcelain cliffs in a dozen tiny echoes.
Oren looked upward.
“How long have we got?”
Lila thought of the kettle, the tea leaves, and her aunt's determination that a good cup should never be wasted.
“Less,” she said, “than I would like.”

Develop this idea
Establish scale rules early: what crosses the boundary, how time passes, and whether matter changes size. The inhabitants need their own expertise and preferences. Lila's geology can identify a route while still leaving her dependent on local knowledge. Keep the deadline legible through an ordinary approaching tea ritual. Avoid treating destruction of a beautiful object as a greater loss than the lives within it.
