The Atlas of Stolen Rivers

A salvage diver finds a map of rivers erased from history.

ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

The river appeared on the map only when it was wet.

Eva discovered this by spilling coffee.

She blamed the boat.

The boat was tied securely to the dock and had done nothing.

A blue line spread across the atlas page, winding through hills that every modern map described as dry. Beside it, tiny names emerged from the stained paper.

Villages.

Bridges.

A city.

Eva put down the cup.

She had recovered the atlas from a submerged municipal archive two days earlier. Most of the books had dissolved into a soft brown argument against paper. This one had survived inside a copper box.

She had expected records of shipping taxes.

Not a river that seemed embarrassed to be seen.

Rafi arrived carrying a magnifying lens and two sandwiches.

"You said it was urgent."

She pointed.

He forgot the sandwiches.

For ten minutes he said nothing. He turned the page toward the light, examined the scale and compared the boundary marks with a map on his tablet.

Finally he looked up.

"This channel was filled in."

"When?"

"Officially, it never existed."

Eva had heard officially used that way before. Usually by someone explaining why a salvage claim belonged to a company rather than the person who had nearly drowned retrieving it.

She touched the blue line.

At its end, beneath the city symbol, was a number.

An account number.

Rafi recognized the format.

"Water authority."

"The city still pays?"

He did not answer.

Outside, a tanker moved slowly past the dock, carrying fresh water toward the wealthy districts along the coast.

Eva watched its wake strike her hull.

She thought of the villages inland, where people queued beside public taps and were told the basin had always been dry.

Rafi unfolded the modern map.

There was a road where the river should have been.

Eva picked up the sandwiches.

"Then we'd better find out where that road goes."

Outline and characters
  1. Eva salvages an atlas from a submerged archive.
  2. Rafi identifies rivers removed from later editions.
  3. They follow a dry channel toward an undocumented settlement.
  4. Residents reveal ongoing payments for water diverted generations earlier.
  5. A utility company claims the map is a forgery.
  6. Eva finds physical evidence of the original engineering works.
  7. A storm threatens to expose the settlement by destroying its barrier.
  8. They choose public rescue over preserving their secret route.
  9. Independent surveys establish the theft and support restitution.
  10. The atlas becomes a shared record rather than another owner's claim.
Characters
  • Eva Marsh, 39. A salvage diver recovering a water-damaged atlas
  • Rafi Cole, 46. A cartographer tracing deliberately erased waterways
Series possibilities
  • Eva and Rafi investigate a coastline whose maps show land beneath occupied homes.
