The Kingdom Beneath a Sleeping Horse
A border surveyor discovers that her kingdom is painted on a sleeping celestial horse. War drums are waking it, and the safest route to peace lies beneath its ribs.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The border moved while Asha was eating an apple.
Only six inches.
Enough to make the war inevitable or her survey worthless, depending on which official read the report first.
She set down the apple and measured again.
The ridge rose beneath her boots.
Then settled.
On the far side of the valley, the enemy standard dipped in exactly the same rhythm.
Asha closed her notebook.
There were explanations for moving ground. Water. Frost. Bad stone. None explained why the three survey stakes had warmed as if someone had held them in a hand.
Behind her, a man cleared his throat.
He wore a stable keeper's coat and carried no horse.
"Don't put another stake in."
"Why?"
"It itches."
Asha looked at him.
The man's name was Darin. He had guided her through the northern passes for three days without offering an opinion on anything except tea.
Now he was watching the ridge with the guilty tenderness of someone standing beside a sleeping child.
A drum sounded from the fortress below.
The ground shifted.
Darin flinched.
"They need to stop doing that."
Asha crouched.
Beneath the grass, fine dark lines crossed the stone. She had marked them as mineral seams.
They curved too evenly.
Darin began singing under his breath.
The ground slowed.
Asha looked toward the fortress, the river and the familiar hills she had measured since her apprenticeship. For a moment she saw them as parts of something whose shape had been hidden by its size.
"How long have you known?"
Darin looked at her apple.
"Best finish that before we go."
"Go where?"
He pointed to the valley.
A long, low sound passed beneath the kingdom. Every window in the fortress trembled.
Asha had heard it before during spring storms.
This time she recognized the end of it.
A sigh.
Darin folded his coat over one arm.
"Somewhere," he said, "we can apologize properly."

Develop this idea
For unusual epic-fantasy worldbuilding, turn the impossible landscape into a consistent geography. Readers should understand how breathing changes rivers, roads and borders before the horse threatens to move. Asha's measurements and Darin's songs offer different forms of evidence. Avoid treating the living world as a puzzle that exists only for humans to solve. Your version could place a society on another immense creature, but the final negotiation should recognize that creature's needs as well as the kingdom's.
