The Desert That Followed Us Home

A field meteorologist returns with a sample of sand that begins extending its desert through her city. To lead stranded neighbors home, she must travel back to the place her expedition refused to map.

ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

By breakfast, the desert had reached Eva's fourth-floor landing.

Sand pressed against the fire door. Fine red grains sifted beneath it and gathered around her bare feet.

She had brought home one sealed sample jar.

It stood on the kitchen table, empty.

Eva pulled on boots, took the expedition radio from a drawer, and opened the landing door six inches.

Heat struck her face.

Beyond the threshold lay a dune beneath an enormous white sky. The stairwell had disappeared. Somewhere below, a car alarm sounded once and stopped.

Her neighbor called from the next flat.

“Is this yours?”

“I think so.”

“I've got a hospital appointment.”

Eva secured a rope around the radiator. Its bolts had been installed during a renovation she had complained about for three weeks. She hoped the work had been better than the noise suggested.

Across the dune, a red scarf moved beside a lamp post.

Someone was out there.

She called Jonas.

He answered with the muffled voice of a man still in bed.

“The sample,” she said.

He was silent long enough for her to hear him sit up.

“Don't step onto the sand.”

“A neighbor already has.”

“Which direction?”

Eva looked through the opening. The scarf had vanished. In its place stood a black ridge she recognized from the expedition's final day.

The place they had not mapped.

Jonas had wanted to continue. Their sponsor had wanted a clean boundary. Eva had signed the weather assessment that allowed the team to turn back.

Now the ridge stood where the city hospital should have been.

She clipped the rope to her harness.

“Bring the old survey.”

“The approved one?”

“No.”

Her neighbor opened his door carrying a bottle of water and a folding walking stick.

Eva handed him the radio.

“Stay here and keep talking.”

Then she stepped through the fire door into the expedition they had left unfinished.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep the desert's expansion fantastical while grounding survival details in researched heat, navigation, and water constraints. Eva should have contributed to the original mistake without having understood the full consequence. Give the stranded neighbors useful skills and disagreements. The return journey needs a concrete destination and changing obstacles, not simply a symbolic apology to nature. Recovery should leave the city altered in a visible way.

  1. Eva's sand sample becomes a moving dune.
  2. Neighbors vanish behind an advancing dry horizon.
  3. Jonas finds the expedition's omitted survey zone.
  4. A rescue party enters through a buried street.
  5. Their instruments follow incompatible weather systems.
  6. Eva admits why the team turned back.
  7. The desert reveals a displaced watercourse.
  8. Survivors choose a route beyond the sponsor's claim.
  9. The sample returns to its living landscape.
  10. The city rebuilds around a changed boundary.
