The Castle Under My Skin
An adult tattoo artist wakes with a castle moving beneath the map on her arm. The people inside need a home outside her body, but the architect helping them escape discovers that the original owner designed the refuge to make leaving impossible.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
A woman opened a window in the castle on Mina Venn's arm. She shook out a tablecloth, scattering crumbs no larger than freckles, then looked up and saw Mina looking down.
Both of them screamed. The woman's scream was very small. Mina's brought the upstairs neighbor to the door.
'Everything all right?'
'An ink problem.'
He accepted this. Tattoo artists were allowed a certain amount of alarming language before breakfast.
Mina had drawn the castle herself: a delicate map of a refuge she remembered dreaming about as a child. It occupied the outside of her forearm in black and gold, safely healed for twelve years. Now a flag moved above its tower. Below it, people gathered in a courtyard no larger than a thumbnail.
She did not touch the ink. Instead she held a magnifier over the window. The woman returned carrying a sign.
PLEASE STOP MOVING THE SKY.
Mina rested her arm on the table. 'Sorry.'
By noon she had found Jonas Rowan in the city directory. Architect of magical refuges. Licensed for inhabited miniatures. The second qualification had never seemed particularly relevant to her life.
He arrived with a case of measuring lenses and asked whether anyone inside appeared hurt.
'Frightened,' Mina said. 'Mostly by me.'
Jonas examined the gold line around the outer wall. His careful expression changed.
'Where did you learn this plan?'
'I dreamed it.'
'Who taught you to dream it?'
Mina looked at the people waiting in the courtyard. Their houses were beautiful, their gardens impossibly neat. Every road curved inward. No gate opened onto the blank skin beyond the map.
A second sign rose beneath the window. This one had been made from a door.
WE WERE TOLD YOU WOULD BE A WAY OUT.
Mina met Jonas's eyes.
'You know this place,' she said.
He closed the smallest lens. 'I know what its architect called protection.'

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
Keep the inhabited castle within animated tattoo ink, with no graphic bodily invasion. Mina controls examination and access to her arm while the residents retain agency over their own homes. Jonas's architectural knowledge should carry a history he must disclose. The escape needs material planning and a habitable destination, not simply erasing the image. Distinguish refuge from captivity through roads, gates and maintenance. The final design should give Mina relief without making residents homeless or dependent on a new owner.
- Mina discovers people living in her tattoo map.
- Jonas recognizes the refuge's inward-only design.
