The Corpse Forgot Its Library Card

A mobile librarian finds a dead man clutching a return slip for a book that never existed. Every village on her route insists it lent him the same title.

How it begins

The dead man had returned his book on time.

Tessa appreciated that before she appreciated the rest.

His hand lay beside the bookmobile's rear wheel, holding a pink slip with her library's stamp. Due date Friday. Return date Thursday. No fine.

The police officer asked whether she recognized him.

"No."

"The book?"

She bent closer without moving anything.

The Orchard of Borrowed Names.

"We don't have that."

"Have you checked?"

Tessa looked at him.

She knew every book on the van, including the three that smelled faintly of cabbage and the gardening manual nobody admitted renewing for eight years.

"I'll check," she said.

Inside, the little printer blinked for paper. Outside, rain began making the lane narrower.

The catalog returned no result.

Neither did the county system.

Tessa called the first village on her route. Mrs. Vale answered from the community shop.

"Of course we have it."

"Who wrote it?"

A pause.

"The man who did the other one."

"What other one?"

"I'll look."

At the second village, the volunteer said the book had gone out on Tuesday.

At the third, a man insisted his wife had returned it last month.

By the fourth call, the officer had stopped pretending not to listen.

Imran arrived with a parcel for the village hall and stood beside the police tape.

"You're early," he said.

"I was here at nine."

"That's what I mean."

He pointed at the fuel receipt tucked above her dashboard.

Yesterday's date. A filling station thirty miles beyond the end of her route.

Tessa had spent yesterday at a safeguarding course in town.

The officer looked from the receipt to the return slip.

"Who else has keys?"

Tessa thought of the volunteers, the spare set in the office and the small trust on which five villages depended.

Behind her, the printer woke.

A pink slip slid into the tray.

The Orchard of Borrowed Names.

Due tomorrow.

Develop this idea

For a bookmobile cozy mystery, the route is your locked room. Give readers a clear sequence of stops, lending dates and travel times. The nonexistent title should conceal a comprehensible system, not an endlessly expanding secret society. Tessa's relationships with readers can explain who trusts her with information. Your version could move the idea to an island ferry library or a mountain delivery service, preserving the pleasure of a familiar route revealing one impossible journey.

  1. Tessa discovers a dead man beside the bookmobile
  2. He holds a return slip for a nonexistent book
  3. Each village claims it lent the same title
  4. Imran notices a stop missing from the route's fuel record
  5. Tessa traces the title to a shared cataloging error
  6. The error concealed a set of documents moving between borrowers
  7. A reader admits using the van as a private courier
  8. Tessa reconstructs the dead man's journey from stamped dates
  9. A substituted return slip exposes the person who staged the discovery
  10. The villages retain their library after confronting the scheme funding its threatened closure
