The Oath Between Our Shadows

A shadow cartographer and an enemy envoy discover their shadows have sworn a peace neither government will accept. Saving the city means deciding whether to trust a promise their bodies made without them.

How it begins

Iria noticed the treaty because she stepped on it.

The words lay across the canal pavement in a narrow band of shadow, blacker than the evening around them. Neither lamp nor moon could have made them. She knew the city's light too well.

WE WILL KEEP THEM SAFE.

At one end stood her own boots. At the other stood the envoy from the country that had spent eleven years trying to drown the lower wards.

He looked down at the words, then at her.

"That isn't mine."

Iria folded the map she had brought to the surrender meeting. "It is wearing your shoes."

The envoy's face might have been handsome in a city that did not know his flag. Here, the little silver clasp at his throat had the effect of a drawn blade. People crossing the square gave him space without appearing to notice they were doing it.

He moved one foot.

The words tightened.

Somewhere below the pavement, water struck a locked gate.

Iria felt the pressure in her knees. She had mapped shadows since her apprenticeship, measuring the shapes buildings kept after their owners changed the doors. She had never seen one refuse to follow.

"Did you promise somebody protection?" she asked.

"Many people."

"Anyone you meant?"

He looked at her properly then.

Across the canal, the council bell began its slow call to the meeting. In half an hour, Iria was expected to hand over a map that omitted six inhabited streets. The council called the omission necessary. Her sister lived in one of them.

The envoy touched the clasp at his throat.

"Do not read the next line aloud."

Iria had already seen it forming.

Not yours. Not mine.

Below the words, their shadows opened into a shape she recognized: the narrow bridges of the lower wards, joined into a route no official map had ever admitted.

The envoy offered his hand.

She did not take it.

"Start," she said, "with the people you were planning to leave behind."

Develop this idea

An enemies-to-lovers romantasy becomes more compelling when its magical bond creates a problem rather than deciding the romance. Give Iria and Darian reasons to distrust each other that survive attraction. Establish exactly what a shadow can promise and whether a person may refuse that promise. The city's hidden routes provide practical scenes as well as symbolism. In your version, change the craft, the political cost and the act that earns trust. Let the lovers choose each other after they have regained the freedom to leave.

  1. Iria finds her shadow joined to the enemy envoy's
  2. Darian denies making the peace oath visible between them
  3. A council orders the shadows severed before the next tide
  4. Iria traces the oath to districts erased from official maps
  5. Darian admits his delegation planned to abandon those districts
  6. Their attraction grows while they work under separate agreed terms
  7. A failed severing begins tearing the city's safe routes apart
  8. Iria offers the true map to both populations rather than either ruler
  9. Darian relinquishes his authority so the residents can ratify their own peace
  10. The couple chooses a personal promise after the public oath is freely accepted
