How it begins

Leah recognized her own wedding dress before she recognized the man beside her.

This was surprising. She had never owned a wedding dress.

The photograph floated in the developing tray, slowly admitting its details. White sleeves. A narrow courtyard. Her hand resting on a stranger's shoulder with an ease that made her feel watched.

She checked the film envelope.

MERCER ANNIVERSARY. SATURDAY.

She had photographed that event herself. Fifty years married, sixty guests, one uncle who believed the camera could not see him stealing cake.

There had been no courtyard.

Leah lifted the print with tongs.

The groom's face remained blurred. So did hers. At the nearest table, an empty chair cast a sharp black shadow. Beside it sat a man she knew from the news.

Missing for nineteen days.

She put the photograph down.

The studio was silent except for the extractor fan. Beyond the red darkroom light, her phone vibrated against a lens cap.

Unknown number.

She ignored it.

A pale mark appeared along the photograph's white border. Leah leaned closer. Not a processing stain. A footprint, small and wet-looking, as though someone inside the picture had stepped toward its edge.

The phone stopped, then started again.

"North Photography."

"Did you use a silver rangefinder at Saturday's event?"

Leah looked at the old camera on the shelf. She had bought it at a clearance sale because its shutter sounded beautiful.

"Who's asking?"

"Tom Avery. I'm investigating its previous owner."

She glanced back at the tray.

The groom's face was becoming clearer.

"Mr. Avery," she said, "are you wearing a blue tie?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"Please take it off."

"What?"

"Just for a moment."

There was a rustle at the other end.

In the photograph, the knot at the stranger's throat loosened. The tie vanished.

Leah sat down on the floor.

"Where are you?" he asked.

She looked at the smiling woman in the dress. At the missing man. At the empty chair.

"I don't think that's the important question anymore."
