I Can Only Level Up While Lost
A professional mountain guide receives a class that rewards getting lost. To rescue a stranded expedition, she must leave every route she trusts, while deciding whether a system that values uncertainty is teaching courage or simply selling danger as growth.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Mara Holt earned no experience for finding the missing walkers.
She earned forty points for taking the wrong path back to their car.
The blue message hovered over the trail marker with the self-satisfaction of a system that had never carried an injured person through sleet.
EXPLORATION CLASS UNLOCKED.
"I have been a guide for nineteen years," Mara said.
The message added a small celebration effect.
A confetti bird struck a branch and vanished.
Behind her, Elias Venn lowered the stretcher straps onto the grass. The rescued walkers were safe in the volunteer vehicle, drinking something hot and reconsidering their relationship with weather forecasts.
"What does it want?" he asked.
"Apparently, incompetence."
Elias read the notification.
"Or something you don't already know. Those aren't always the same thing."
Mara looked up at the ridge. The correct path followed a familiar line of stone posts. She had helped repair three of them. She could walk that route in poor light without needing a system to tell her whether the journey had been worthwhile.
A second message appeared.
SKILL AVAILABLE: THE WAY YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN.
Beneath it, a rescue call flashed red.
An expedition had missed two check-ins beyond the northern pass. Their last position lay on a map Mara trusted because she'd drawn part of it herself.
Now the map showed a blank square where the pass should have been.
Elias took out his old notebook.
"Before you accept anything," he said, "we make rules of our own."
Mara nodded. Partners. Retreat conditions. No bonus worth leaving someone behind.
The system waited, bright and patient.
Somewhere above the clouds, the mountain rang a bell she had never heard before.
Mara tightened her boot laces, opened the rescue channel, and asked the expedition to describe what they could see, rather than what the map said ought to be there.

Develop this idea
Visible experience gains, class choices and skill constraints should drive this LitRPG rather than appear as occasional decoration. Distinguish unfamiliar terrain from reckless behavior: Mara's professional judgment remains valuable even when the system rewards exploration. Elias should contribute craft knowledge without knowing every answer. Research mountain rescue at a broad level, avoiding practical hazardous instructions. A satisfying progression arc discovers a consistent rule through costly choices instead of revealing an arbitrary loophole at the climax.
