How it begins

Tessa's second heart began beating when the physician lied.

She felt it beneath her left ribs, a sharp small rhythm answering the ordinary pulse she had lived with for thirty-five years.

Eren Vale looked at her hand.

“What changed?”

“You said it wouldn't hurt.”

“I said the examination shouldn't.”

The second heart struck harder.

Tessa took his wrist.

“Try the truth.”

He went still.

In the estate garden, rain darkened the hedge she had spent the morning trimming. The thorns carried the king's old enchantments: boundaries, warnings, punishments made beautiful enough that visitors called them tradition.

One had cut her palm last spring.

The first heart weakened in winter. The second grew behind it, stubborn as a root.

Eren looked at the instruments laid out beside the window.

“Yes,” he said. “It may hurt.”

The second rhythm settled.

Tessa released his wrist.

“That is more useful.”

He nodded, accepting the rebuke without trying to make it charming.

She had expected another court physician to explain what must be removed for her own good. Eren had arrived without a royal carriage, asked which chair she preferred and waited outside while she decided whether to admit him.

Now she could hear him breathing carefully.

“What do you know about the thorns?” she asked.

“Enough to know this wasn't an accident.”

Outside, the gardener's bell rang. Tessa's first heart wanted the familiar path, the unfinished work, the quiet satisfaction of something growing where she placed it.

The second turned toward the physician.

She disliked that. Desire felt less trustworthy when it arrived alongside a symptom.

Eren stepped away from the chair.

“We can stop.”

“Will you come back?”

“If you ask.”

Both hearts beat once, differently.

Tessa looked at the open door, then at the man leaving her enough space to use it.

“Tell me what happens if we leave both,” she said.

For the first time, he sat down as though the answer belonged to a conversation rather than a cure.

Develop this idea

Do not make one heart the authentic voice and the other a convenient falsehood. Conflicting desires can both belong to Tessa. Eren's medical role creates a dependency the romance must acknowledge rather than exploit. Establish the curse's function and the cost of changing it. The climax should restore Tessa's authority to decide, with a romantic future possible after immediate treatment and obligation end.

  1. Tessa's second heart answers a stranger.
  2. Eren identifies the curse's original purpose.
  3. The palace demands one heart be surrendered.
  4. Both hearts express incompatible real desires.
  5. Their collaboration uncovers an earlier failed cure.
  6. Tessa learns Eren once served the court.
  7. He discloses the research he withheld.
  8. They reject the crown's definition of loyalty.
  9. Tessa chooses a life with negotiated limits.
  10. Their relationship begins beyond the treatment.
