How it begins

The queen's spare death began asking for Iona at half past two.

She was polishing the ordinary deaths when she heard it.

Most lanterns made no sound. A few hummed. Lord Perring's had whistled through its teeth for six years, an achievement made more irritating by the fact that it possessed neither teeth nor lungs.

This voice was different.

"Iona."

She dropped the cloth.

The royal lantern hung above the central basin, its glass pale as milk. Inside, the queen's postponed ending moved like a moth unable to find the window.

Nobody approached it without gloves.

Iona approached it barehanded.

"Say that again."

A pause.

"I was hoping you would recognize me the first time."

Darian.

She had not heard his voice in eight years. She had spent the first two being angry, the next three being sensible and the remainder declining invitations that involved dancing.

"You are not dead," she said.

"I've been trying to establish that."

The lantern warmed.

In the basin beneath it, water reflected a room she did not recognize. A narrow bed. A barred window. A man's hand gripping the edge of a table.

On his wrist lay a new silver line.

Iona knew what it meant.

A year, transferred.

Above them, bells announced the queen's safe return from the northern hunt.

The lantern brightened.

Darian gasped.

Iona reached for the basin's cover, then stopped. Closing it would silence him. It would not stop whatever was happening.

"Where are you?"

"Under the east gate."

"The prison?"

"I came to surrender."

She stared at his reflection.

"That is a terrible plan."

"It got me close enough to hear your bells."

Footsteps sounded beyond the vault door. Two guards, by the rhythm. The night inspection.

Iona lifted the ordinary lantern nearest her and set it beside the royal one.

Lord Perring's death began whistling.

For the first time in six years, she was grateful.

"Stay with me," she whispered.

Darian laughed once, painfully.

"I thought you'd never ask."
