The Healer Deals Damage

An adult healer discovers her restoration spells injure enemies who have stolen other people's health. Building a party around that unsettling power means learning what the system counts as harm before a tournament rewards her for becoming the thing she fears.

How it begins

Nora Keene cast a healing spell and the tournament favorite fell over.

For a heartbeat, nobody in the practice yard moved. A green number hung above the champion's head, then turned red. His polished armor struck the sand with an expensive clatter. The crowd applauded, uncertainly, because the crowd had been promised a demonstration.

Nora stared at her hands. 'I was restoring his shoulder.'

Daniel Voss knelt beside the fallen man. As a shield-maker, he had seen plenty of people discover unexpected weaknesses. They usually came from the other side of a blade. He checked the champion's breathing, then looked up at Nora with an expression she could not read.

'The shoulder looks better.'

'He looks unconscious.'

'Both things appear true.'

The champion groaned. Gold letters shimmered over the yard. RESTORATION SUCCESSFUL. UNAUTHORIZED VITALITY RETURNED TO ORIGINAL OWNER.

Across the fence, a stable worker straightened. The woman had been limping when Nora arrived. Now she lifted one boot, set it down, and began to cry.

The applause stopped.

Nora crossed the yard before anyone could tell her not to. 'What happened to your leg?'

'Tournament sponsorship,' the worker whispered. 'A little strength each week. The contract said it would grow back.'

The champion sat up. His face had lost its practiced kindness. 'That spell is prohibited.'

Nora looked at the green class badge on her sleeve. Healer, second rank. She had spent eight years earning it through fever wards and broken wrists, through things she could touch and understand. Nobody had mentioned that restoring a person might mean taking something away from someone else.

Daniel rose between her and the champion, holding a plain wooden practice shield.

'I'm not attacking him,' Nora said.

'I know.' He glanced toward the guild officials hurrying across the sand. 'I'm not worried about what you're doing.'

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep the system's health transfers explicit and morally complicated. Some recipients may have consented under pressure; others genuinely benefit from temporary exchanges. Nora needs limits, diagnostic mistakes and a cost for restoration. Daniel supplies defensive strategy rather than solving her ethical decisions. Tournament advancement should create public evidence, not merely stronger combat. The decisive victory restores agency to donors and changes contract enforcement, while leaving worthwhile cooperative healing possible under fairer terms.

  1. Nora's restoration disables a sponsored champion.
  2. A worker regains vitality taken by contract.
  3. The guild restricts Nora's diagnostic access.
  4. Daniel designs shields for defensive restoration.
  5. They recruit donors as informed witnesses.
  6. A healing mistake exposes a voluntary exchange.
  7. Tournament officials offer Nora a lucrative exception.
  8. Her party reveals hidden vitality transfers publicly.
  9. Nora returns stolen health without sacrificing recipients.
  10. A new consent-based healing network replaces coercive contracts.
