ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

The witness changed his mind when the payment cleared.

Leila saw the notification reflected in the prosecutor's glasses.

Upgrade successful.

One second earlier, the man on the courtroom screen had said he was uncertain.

Now he was sure.

She kept her interpretation exact.

"I saw the defendant leave the building."

The judge looked down at his notes.

Leila looked at hers.

Possibly. Dark coat. Could not see face.

Those words had existed. She had heard them in the witness's language, held them briefly in her mouth and carried them into another.

Her job was not to improve what people said.

It was certainly not to make them more convenient.

"Interpreter?" the judge asked.

She realized she had stopped speaking.

"Could the witness repeat the previous sentence?"

The prosecutor's pen paused.

On the screen, the witness smiled.

"I saw the defendant leave the building."

"Before that."

"There was nothing before that."

A soft tone sounded from the courtroom's evidence terminal.

Transcript synchronized.

Leila felt the small coldness that came before understanding.

During the recess, she found Noah Price beside the vending machines, unsuccessfully persuading one to return his money.

"Do you keep recordings?" she asked.

"Of vending machines?"

"Of testimony before it updates."

He stopped pressing the button.

"Before what?"

She showed him her notebook.

Leila wrote by hand because screens could fail, batteries could die and the act of forming letters helped her remember where uncertainty belonged.

Noah read the crossed-out sentence.

Then he looked through the glass doors toward the courtroom.

"Don't give this to anyone."

"It's part of the record."

"That's exactly why."

Across the corridor, the prosecutor was speaking quietly to a technician.

The technician wore the logo of the company providing the remote witness service.

Leila had seen its brochure in the staff room.

Reliable testimony.

Flexible plans.

She had thought flexible meant payment options.

Now she was no longer sure.
