The City That Wears Its Walls Inside

A siege engineer enters a city whose defensive walls run through the bodies of its adult citizens. When an army surrounds it, she must build protection that does not require the inhabitants to remain afraid.

How it begins

The old woman's shadow contained a gate.

Sera saw it turn when the woman moved her arm. A portcullis, two narrow towers and a road running through the dark shape cast across the workshop floor.

Outside, the city's western wall shifted.

The watch captain closed the door.

“We were told you understood structural problems.”

“I do.”

“Good.”

“This is a person.”

Anwar Cole looked tired.

The old woman sat beside the workbench and offered Sera a piece of wrapped bread.

“They forget that part when they're frightened.”

Beyond the workshop, bells announced the siege positions. Footsteps moved through the street. Shopkeepers, porters and clerks took their appointed places while the army beyond the valley prepared another day of waiting.

The city had never fallen.

Sera had been hired to discover why its defenses were weakening.

She knelt beside the woman's chair.

“Does it hurt?”

“Only when I want to go somewhere.”

Anwar looked away.

On the wall map, the western gate glowed.

Sera asked to see the original plans.

“There are no original plans,” Anwar said.

“Everything built has a beginning.”

“The council calls this a blessing.”

Sera opened her engineering case.

Blessings were often structures whose maintenance somebody had decided not to cost honestly.

She placed a measuring thread beside the shadow. The tiny gate shivered. Outside, iron groaned against stone.

The old woman closed her eyes.

Sera withdrew the thread.

“I won't test that again without asking.”

The woman opened one eye.

“Excellent start.”

Anwar went to the map and removed a later overlay.

Beneath the modern assignments, faded lines showed a different arrangement: supports outside the living districts, roads wide enough for people to leave, a gate that did not borrow its hinges from a woman's body.

Sera looked at the captain.

“Why was this changed?”

He kept his hand on the old paper.

“Because the newer version was cheaper.”

Outside, the bells rang again.

This time, Sera heard the bill arriving.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep the bodily magic non-graphic and explain how positions, stress and defenses connect. Sera's alternative should require labor and resources, rather than simply discovering that kindness defeats an army. Anwar needs to confront the people harmed by his enforcement. Give residents different risk tolerances and useful skills. The final protection works because the city changes its arrangement, not because everyone agrees to endure more bravely.

  1. Sera finds a street appearing inside a resident.
  2. Anwar explains the city's living defenses.
  3. The siege forces citizens into assigned positions.
  4. A missing worker weakens an entire district.
  5. Sera discovers the wall's original voluntary design.
  6. Officials refuse a safer expensive alternative.
  7. Anwar admits enforcing the compulsory placements.
  8. Citizens build external supports together.
  9. A negotiated evacuation defeats the siege strategy.
  10. Protection no longer depends on fear.
Characters
  • Sera Nasser, 41. Siege engineer
  • Anwar Cole, 44. City watch captain
