The Queen of Unclaimed Bones

A desert fossil keeper is crowned queen of a creature no kingdom admits existed. Its bones are becoming a living border, and every claimant wants her to name the land before it wakes.

How it begins

The crown fitted inside the fossil's smallest tooth.

Nara had put it there to stop it blowing away. By noon, three ambassadors had accused her of sacrilege, theft, and a fourth offense that required a translator. She continued brushing sand from the jaw.

“Your Majesty,” said the tallest ambassador.

“The tooth is older than your language. Address it.”

Behind him, Vey Rohan unrolled a survey map against the wind. He had come without an honor guard, which made him either sensible or considerably more dangerous than the others. His boots carried the pale clay of the eastern wells. Nobody from the capital visited those wells without wanting to measure something.

“The border moved last night,” he said.

“Borders often do. Men carry flags.”

“This one carried a village.”

Nara stopped brushing.

At dawn she had found a cooking pot wedged between two vertebrae. It was still warm. She had assumed the diggers were being careless again. Now she looked past the ambassadors toward the ridge, where the creature's exposed ribs rose like doorways along the horizon.

There were washing lines between them.

Vey held the map flat with his injured hand. The inked frontier crossed a well, an orchard, and the house in which his mother had been born. A fresh pencil line curved six miles west.

“The villagers woke here,” he said. “Their foundations came with them.”

Under Nara's knees, something gave a slow, deliberate knock.

The ambassadors fell silent. Sand ran into the jaw's empty sockets. From somewhere inside the immense skull came the sound of water being swallowed.

Nara took the crown out of the tooth and handed it to the nearest royal official.

“Find out who needs that well,” she told Vey.

“What about the coronation?”

“The creature has moved a village to get a drink. I would prefer to understand its thirst before we make it a country.”

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Build the political conflict around three specific uses of the same land: seasonal grazing, permanent settlement, and seasonal fossil mining. Give each claimant something worth protecting, then show who their preferred border would exclude. Nara's expertise should solve practical problems before it wins authority. Develop the creature as an animal with needs, rather than a convenient judge of human virtue.

  1. A fossil rib moves across the border.
  2. Nara refuses an ownership coronation.
  3. Surveyors find villages inside the skeleton.
  4. Three crowns send rival genealogies.
  5. A buried treaty contradicts every claimant.
  6. The bones shelter an arriving caravan.
  7. Vey reveals his survey displaced families.
  8. Nara invites testimony beyond the kingdoms.
  9. The waking creature chooses a migration route.
  10. A moving commons replaces the contested throne.
