The Army of Unfinished Statues

A stone conservator awakens an army abandoned before its sculptors gave it faces. The statues will defend the country only after learning which living people the country has refused to see.

How it begins

The first statue woke without a face and asked whether the war had finished.

Alma nearly dropped her chisel.

Dust moved inside the blank oval above its shoulders. The voice seemed to come through the stone beneath her feet.

“Which war?”

The statue considered this.

“Then perhaps it hasn't.”

For three months Alma had cleaned the royal quarry's abandoned figures. Soldiers, all unfinished. Some had hands but no feet. Some wore armor detailed down to the smallest buckle while their heads remained smooth blocks.

The palace wanted twelve restored for a border ceremony.

It had not mentioned conversation.

“My name is Toren,” the statue said.

“Who gave it to you?”

“I don't remember agreeing.”

Alma set the chisel on the ground.

The quarry's morning light reached the figure's chest. Beneath the dust, an old inscription appeared.

TO DEFEND THE PEOPLE.

A later hand had added OF THE CROWN.

The cut was shallower.

Beyond the quarry gate, the royal commissioner arrived on horseback with six guards and the satisfaction of a man expecting useful progress.

Alma stepped away from the statue.

Toren turned toward the sound.

“What are my orders?”

The commissioner dismounted before she could answer.

“You recognize authority. Excellent.”

The statue remained still.

“I asked what they are.”

Alma watched the man search for a command impressive enough to make the distinction disappear.

Around the quarry, other stone hands began moving.

A finger uncurled. A shoulder shifted. From somewhere in the back rank came the scrape of a soldier trying to sit.

Alma looked at the unfinished faces.

For centuries, the kingdom had called them an army waiting to be completed. She had assumed completion meant carving the features the sculptors had not reached.

Now Toren lifted one enormous hand toward the inscription on his chest.

“Which people?” he asked.

The question moved through the quarry more powerfully than the first sound of awakening.

Alma picked up her notebook instead of her chisel.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

The statues should have different capacities and views rather than behave as one conveniently wise army. Alma's conservation work can reveal how the original design changed. Give the external threat urgency without making it an excuse to suspend every choice. The climax should need both military action and a negotiated purpose, with at least one statue choosing a life beyond service.

  1. Alma wakes a statue without a face.
  2. Toren refuses an unexamined royal order.
  3. The army begins asking different questions.
  4. A border crisis makes obedience urgent.
  5. Alma finds the sculptors' rejected designs.
  6. Toren remembers whom his army once displaced.
  7. Citizens help finish choices rather than faces.
  8. The statues negotiate their service openly.
  9. The defense protects a mixed civilian refuge.
  10. Alma preserves an unfinished figure by request.
