Everyone Survived the Shipwreck Reunion

Twenty years after a minor ferry accident, every survivor receives an invitation to a luxurious reunion, including a woman who never boarded. An insurance archivist and a skeptical caterer investigate why someone needs one extra guest to remember the wrong evening.

How it begins

Ruth Ellis had spent twenty years proving that she had never been on the ferry. The hotel had printed her a place card anyway.

It stood beside a miniature paper boat and a menu with too many courses for a minor accident. Across the dining room, guests greeted one another with the careful excitement of people unsure how much they were supposed to remember.

Ruth was forty-six now. The date of the crossing appeared on the invitation in silver ink. That evening she had been working in an insurance records room, processing a claim about a roof. There were time sheets. There were witnesses. There had been an unmemorable cheese sandwich.

'Allergy?' the caterer asked.

'Identity.'

He glanced at the card.

'Difficult to substitute at this stage.'

His badge said Daniel Marsh. Forty, she learned when he made a joke about being old enough to remember affordable butter. He had already noticed the extra setting.

'Thirty guests ordered. Thirty-one names confirmed. The organizer said the difference was sentimental.'

Ruth handed him her invitation.

'I wrote twice explaining the mistake.'

'They sent me a photograph of the boat. I suggested a simpler centerpiece.'

On the wall behind the buffet hung that photograph, enlarged and framed. Ruth examined the passengers visible along the rail. She knew their names from the file. One had claimed for a ruined accordion. Another had insisted that the ferry company replace a cake. Nobody had died. Nobody had even needed a night in hospital.

Then she saw herself near the stern.

Not a resemblance. Her face. Her coat. The handbag she had bought three years after the accident.

Daniel followed her gaze.

'Is that possible?'

'Not historically.'

A woman at the next table raised her glass toward Ruth.

'You came,' she said. 'Now perhaps we can agree what happened.'

Ruth pulled out her chair but did not sit. Under the plate lay a second photograph, folded once to conceal the date.

Develop this idea

Deliver a fully practical explanation for the impossible-looking photograph and the extra invitation. The original ferry incident is minor, so suspense comes from a present-day use of its record rather than escalating old harm. Ruth's archival skill and Daniel's logistical observations should solve different parts of the puzzle. Keep guests individually recognizable and the tone wry. Correcting a false memory need not mean humiliating everyone who sincerely believed it.

  1. Ruth attends only to correct the record and finds herself inserted into a reunion photograph.
  2. Daniel confirms discrepancies between the paid guest list, confirmed names, and table settings.
  3. They preserve copies with permission before challenging the organizer's account.
  4. Minor original claims reveal that the reunion's dramatic language exaggerates the accident.
  5. A later event has been blended with the ferry evening to create a useful false chronology.
  6. Ruth discovers that someone in the original records office helped establish the misleading account.
  7. Guests divide between correcting the past and protecting a comforting shared story.
  8. Daniel uses service timings and delivery records to test the organizer's new explanation.
  9. Ruth demonstrates the photograph's alteration and identifies who needed the extra witness.
  10. The guests leave with a corrected record and a modest real meal, allowing an honest reunion to replace the manufactured one.
