Murder at the Borrowed Birthday

A party organizer finds a dead guest at a birthday hired under someone else's name. The cake inscription is correct; every other detail belongs to a different year.

How it begins

Pippa had ordered a cake for sixty, but the birthday girl claimed to be fifty-seven and the dead man had not been on the guest list.

The cake, at least, was excellent.

Ruth stood beside it holding the box.

“Shall I put it somewhere cold?”

“The kitchen.”

“It contains buttercream.”

“I meant the cake.”

Ruth glanced toward the man in the corner, then back at Pippa. “So did I.”

The village hall smelled of polish, balloons, and the chicken dish Ruth had refused to call by its advertised name. Twenty places waited around the long table. Nineteen had glasses. One had an old-fashioned teacup.

Pippa checked the booking form.

Mrs Caroline Vale. Sixtieth birthday. No surprises.

The woman who had arrived under that name stood outside with the police, explaining that she had received an invitation like everyone else.

Pippa had spoken to the client twice by telephone. A woman's voice. Careful, pleasant, particular about the music.

Ruth opened the cake box.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAROLINE, said the icing.

Beneath it was a date from twenty years earlier.

Pippa stared. Ruth set the box down very carefully.

“You gave me that date,” Ruth said.

“I gave you the form.”

They looked at the form together.

In the kitchen doorway, a guest began crying quietly.

Ruth knew her. Everyone knew someone in a village hall. That was both the charm of the place and, Pippa was beginning to suspect, the problem.

“This menu,” Ruth said, “I've made it before.”

“For a birthday?”

“For a party that never finished.”

Pippa looked at the single teacup. Its handle had been repaired with a thin line of gold.

The dead man's hand rested beside it, carefully positioned as though he had been waiting to make a toast.

This time, someone had intended to finish the party for him.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Build the mystery around a specific earlier birthday and make each repeated detail serve the present plot. Readers need a manageable guest list and clear reasons for accepting an odd invitation. Keep the death non-graphic and allow warmth through the organizers' practical friendship. The cake should be a clue rather than a random comic prop, with its inscription revealing who misunderstood the original event.

  1. Pippa finds a dead guest before the candles.
  2. The birthday booking uses another woman's name.
  3. Ruth recognizes a menu from twenty years ago.
  4. Guests disagree about who invited them.
  5. The cake inscription matches an old photograph.
  6. A missing guest's place has been recreated.
  7. Pippa traces alterations to the booking form.
  8. The seating plan exposes a false alibi.
  9. A remembered toast establishes the killer's timing.
  10. The hall hosts an honest celebration afterward.
