My Dinosaur Has a Side Quest
A mount trainer discovers her dinosaur companion has been accepting quests without her. Following its strange errands reveals a monster civilization hidden beneath the player economy, and a rescue mission whose rewards have nothing to do with experience points.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Talia's dinosaur came home with a quest reward she had not earned.
It dropped six polished stones into the feed bucket, sneezed a cloud of green sparks, and attempted to look like an animal with no outstanding commitments.
Talia Reed, thirty-one, professional mount trainer, opened their shared log.
NO ACTIVE QUESTS.
The dinosaur nudged the stones behind the bucket.
'All right,' she said. 'Show me the private one.'
A new window appeared.
THIS JOURNAL BELONGS TO ANOTHER PLAYER. REQUEST ACCESS?
Talia sat down. She had trained the feathered creature since it first arrived at the frontier stable. She knew its favorite food, its left-turn habit, and the exact expression it used when pretending not to understand a gate. She had never asked whether it considered her a companion or an unusually slow moving building.
She selected REQUEST.
The window closed.
Kenji Orr found her twenty minutes later, still waiting. He was thirty-seven, translated monster languages for caravan crews, and had warned the stable owners that obedience was not the same as agreement.
'You finally asked,' he said.
'I thought I had a mount.'
'You do. It may also have a life.'
The dinosaur considered them, then touched the window with its snout. Three lines became visible.
DELIVER WARM STONES. FIND THE MISSING NEST. KEEP THE RIDERS AWAY.
No experience points. No equipment. The reward was a symbol Talia had seen carved beneath the stable floor.
Kenji stopped smiling.
'That means safe passage for a family.'
Outside, the frontier board announced a newly discovered dungeon and a generous bounty for clearing its breeding chambers. Talia had helped train the mounts assigned to the first expedition.
Her dinosaur stood between her and the door. For the first time, she understood the position as a question.
She took off the saddle.
'You can say no,' she told it. 'But if you want help, I'd like to know what kind.'

Develop this idea
Keep the dinosaur's independent objectives central rather than using them as a cute accessory to Talia's growth. Readable quest rules, consequential choices, and earned skill progression make this recognizably LitRPG without stat-page overload. Kenji should interpret, not magically speak for every monster. The hidden society needs disagreements and practical needs of its own. Reward cooperation with new possibilities, while allowing the companion to choose something Talia would not prefer.
- Talia discovers her dinosaur has a private quest log and requests access rather than overriding it.
- Kenji interprets errands that protect a hidden monster family beneath the frontier stables.
- The pair learn that player bounties mislabel inhabited passages as unoccupied dungeons.
- Talia retrains travel routines to let mounts signal refusal and independent priorities.
- A caravan deadline makes protecting the nesting chambers costly to human livelihoods.
- The dinosaur completes an objective without Talia, forcing her to relinquish the need to be its hero.
- Kenji negotiates with the underground community and translates disagreements within it.
- Talia exposes the bounty's false occupancy data before the clearing expedition departs.
- A rescue succeeds through shared roles and noncombat progression rather than a larger damage statistic.
- The stable becomes a voluntary partnership network, and the dinosaur invites Talia on one quest as an equal participant.
