One Funeral, Six Very Alive Husbands
A celebrant prepares a widower's memorial service and discovers that six living husbands have ordered the identical speech. Someone has forged a marriage worth killing for.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The first husband wanted lilies.
The second was allergic.
By the time the sixth arrived, Alma had moved the flowers into the corridor and opened a spreadsheet.
"Gentlemen," she said, "I think we should begin with the name."
"Marion."
"Mary."
"Mara."
Three answers, spoken together.
The fourth husband took a folded photograph from his wallet. The fifth began putting on his coat.
Alma closed the chapel door.
She had conducted memorials for people with complicated lives. There had been a woman whose ex-husbands formed a choir. There had been a man with two adult families who introduced themselves in the car park and got along so well that the service began late.
This was different.
All six men had brought the same speech.
Not similar. The same.
They had met their beloved at a railway station. She had disliked pears. She had always said that a home was a place where the kettle did not need explaining.
Alma had written that final line herself.
For a stranger who paid in cash on Monday.
"Where did you get these?" she asked.
"My wife left instructions," said the first husband.
Five heads nodded.
Niall from the registry office arrived through the side door carrying a file thicker than the service required.
He looked at the men.
Then at Alma.
"How many have turned up?"
"Six."
He put the file down.
"There should be seven."
Outside, a car alarm began sounding in the chapel car park.
The fifth husband stopped putting on his coat.
Alma looked through the narrow window in the door.
A blue car stood with its boot open. One of the waiting drivers was calling for help.
Behind her, somebody said the woman's name again.
This time it sounded less like grief than a question nobody wanted answered.
Alma turned the spreadsheet toward Niall.
"We'll need another column," she said.
"What for?"
"Which of them is telling the truth."

Develop this idea
This wedding-celebrant mystery should distinguish fraud, loneliness and genuine affection. Give the six men different relationships to the missing woman, and limit the main viewpoint to Alma so the cast stays readable. A repeated phrase can be a clue when its origin becomes clear. Avoid making the woman's multiple marriages the entire punch line. For another version, use conflicting memorial donations or anniversary photographs to create the same fair-play puzzle about identity and access.
