All Dogs Vote for Cats
A town of adult animals elects a cat to solve its dog problems. The canine election clerk and a feline plumber discover the ballot has developed a sense of humor, forcing them to distinguish a popular leader from a useful neighbor.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Every dog in the town voted for a cat. Mabel Brist counted the ballots three times before deciding this was democracy's problem rather than arithmetic's.
The winning candidate stood on the town-hall steps, licking one paw with the calm of someone who had never promised anything specific. His posters said A FRESH PERSPECTIVE. They had shown him facing away from the camera.
Mabel had administered seven elections. Dogs usually voted for dogs, cats voted for cats and the goats voted for whoever offered to remove the fence around the municipal roses. None of this appeared in the official guidance.
Oren Purl arrived with a wrench.
'Ballot box is leaking,' he said.
'It's wooden.'
'It has opinions in it. They seem to be escaping.'
Beneath the box, a small puddle formed the word FINALLY. Mabel put a blotter over it. The blotter developed a face and looked disappointed.
Outside, the new mayor announced that the town would become more agile. The dogs cheered. Oren glanced at the broken wheelchair ramp beside the steps.
'Agile for whom?'
Mabel opened the box. The ballots had changed. Each still bore a clear mark beside the cat's name, but beneath it appeared a sentence in a different handwriting.
SOMEONE WHO ANSWERS MY LETTERS.
A REPAIRED DRAIN.
A PLACE TO SIT WHERE NOBODY ASKS ME TO BUY TEA.
Mabel recognized the third wish. She had made it herself while voting for the dog she always voted for.
The box creaked. Another puddle formed.
YOU KEEP ASKING WHO.
Oren set his wrench beside the ballots. 'Maybe it wants a different question.'
The crowd cheered again. On the steps, the cat promised a listening tour. The leaking box made a rude bubbling noise. Mabel took out a fresh ledger and wrote, very carefully, WHAT NEEDS DOING? Outside, the cat posed.

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
This is an adult animal satire, with practical municipal stakes rather than a simple lesson about species. Mabel's procedural care matters, and the ballot's humor should not become infallible political wisdom. Oren notices maintenance failures because he works on them. Give the elected cat choices that reveal both promise and vanity. The resolution should preserve elections while making accountability continuous and specific. A repaired drain can be a more satisfying payoff than a triumphant speech about democracy.
- Mabel finds all canine votes went to a cat.
- The ballot box begins leaking neglected wishes.
