How it begins

Nobody had ordered the lemon cake.

Dora knew because she had ordered everything else.

Three Victoria sponges. Two trays of brownies. One fruit loaf with a written declaration about the nuts. Enough tea to restore public confidence after a flood.

The lemon cake stood in the middle of the table wearing a blue ribbon.

"Perhaps it's a donation," Imran said.

"Then someone should have told me."

"People sometimes do generous things without a form."

"That is how we acquired the accordion."

He looked toward the cupboard where the accordion had been living since the Christmas raffle.

Dora cut a small serving square from the cake's edge. Beneath the icing, a line of dark writing appeared on a thin sheet of edible paper.

She stopped.

"That's unusual."

Before Imran could answer, someone called from the committee room.

It was not a scream. More a startled refusal, the sound a person makes when a familiar arrangement of the world has become impossible.

They found the fundraiser's organizer beside the filing cabinet. Dora took one look, sent a volunteer to call emergency services, and kept everyone else out of the room.

By the time the police arrived, six slices of the lemon cake had been sold.

Dora stood behind the cordoned table with the cash tin in both hands.

An officer asked who had brought it.

"That's what I'd like to know."

On the remaining icing, the exposed message read DON'T LET HIM.

The rest had gone in paper napkins to people who wanted to help repair the village roof.

Imran leaned close enough to speak quietly.

"Do you remember who bought the corner?"

Dora looked at the sales sheet.

She remembered the buyer very well.

He had insisted he hated lemon, then paid twenty pounds for the only slice with a red sugar flower.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep the death off the page and let the cake-table logistics supply fair clues. Readers should be able to follow who ordered, delivered, photographed, and bought each item. Dora's catering experience is more useful than implausible police access. Avoid casual food-safety advice or making a real allergy a joke. The village can recover its warmth without pretending financial betrayal has no victims.
