My Weakest Unit Is the General

A tactical summoner pulls a level-one general with terrible combat stats and astonishing patience. Her siege engineer sees a strategy hidden in his refusal to sacrifice anyone, while the ranking system declares every successful retreat a catastrophic defeat.

How it begins

Dina spent her last summoning token on a general who had one hit point and no weapon.

He appeared beside the siege map, shook the rain from his hat, and asked how many kitchens the camp possessed.

The interface displayed his attributes.

COMBAT: 1. COMMAND: UNRANKED. PATIENCE: ERROR.

Dina Rook, thirty-two, tactical summoner, stared at the result.

'I needed someone who could win.'

The older man considered the red markers approaching their supply road.

'What would winning leave you with?'

Before she could answer, the ranking system announced that the village beyond the walls had no strategic value. It offered a bonus for abandoning it before the enemy arrived.

Soren Hale came down from the unfinished tower. Forty-six, siege engineer, carrying a board covered in revisions nobody had funded.

'Who is he?'

'Apparently our entire reserve.'

The general asked him about bridges. Soren asked the general about tools. Within a minute they were discussing a route Dina's battle map showed as empty marsh.

'That path takes people away from the siege,' she said.

'Yes.'

'The score will call it a retreat.'

'Will the people arrive somewhere better?'

Dina closed the score window. Beyond the wall, carts were already gathering at the village well. They had families, livestock, and enough food for perhaps three days. None appeared in the tactical overlay.

The general unfolded a chair, sat beside the gate, and began asking the cart drivers where they wanted to go.

Dina waited for a hidden ability to activate. No golden light. No secret rank. No revelation that the useless old man could defeat an army with a spoon.

Soren returned with a list of repair materials.

'He may be exactly what you asked for,' he said.

On Dina's screen, their predicted victory rating fell to zero.

For the first time, she wondered whether the number was measuring the wrong survivors.

Develop this idea

The general must stay genuinely weak in conventional combat; a surprise overwhelming power would undo the premise. Give patience practical limits, resource costs, and occasions when listening reveals incompatible needs. Dina still makes difficult tactical choices and earns progression through better outcomes, not automatic moral bonuses. Keep battle description non-graphic and strategy at a fictional high level. The strongest payoff is an expanded meaning of competence rather than a larger hidden damage number.

  1. Dina summons a physically weak adult general whose unusual patience is not recognized by the ranking system.
  2. Soren identifies practical evacuation routes absent from the tactical overlay.
  3. The general asks civilians what outcomes they need instead of treating them as map furniture.
  4. Dina accepts early score losses to preserve people and supplies.
  5. A retreat creates a genuine shortage that patience alone cannot solve.
  6. Soren's engineering and local knowledge make a defensible temporary refuge possible.
  7. Dina resists a tempting promotion that requires sacrificing the settlement for a clean statistical win.
  8. The team discovers a progression path based on retained capabilities rather than defeated units.
  9. A final confrontation uses negotiation, infrastructure, and restraint at a real cost to their official standing.
  10. Dina builds a new campaign record that counts living communities, while the general remains unimpressive on the old stat screen.
