My Save Point Is on Fire
A courier respawns at a safe inn that is slowly burning across every timeline. A fire-suppression mage helps her investigate quests she has already forgotten, and discovers the inn is not resetting them. It is keeping something alive inside the flames.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Keira Ash respawned beside the same burning curtain for the ninth time. This time the fire was one inch closer to her pillow.
She rolled off the bed, reached the corridor and counted the familiar doors. Six rooms. One staircase. The smell of bread beneath the smoke. The checkpoint inn was supposed to reset completely between failed runs. Its handbook used completely four times in the first paragraph.
Downstairs, Damon Rook stood in the kitchen holding a bowl of water that had turned to steam.
'You remember me,' she said.
'I remember being a fire-suppression mage. At present the title seems optimistic.'
His level marker read forty-two. Hers read eighteen. Neither changed when the wall behind the stove began glowing red. Keira checked the exit. Beyond it lay the road where a bridge monster had killed her eight minutes earlier. Again.
Damon pulled a chair away from the heat. Beneath it, someone had carved nine short lines into the floor. Keira recognized her own habit of crossing the fifth stroke.
'I made those?'
'You thought we should stop trusting memory.'
She did not remember saying that. Her quest log contained the delivery, the monster and a cheerful recommendation to upgrade her boots. Nothing about the inn.
Upstairs, a childlike voice began humming. Damon looked toward the ceiling.
'No guests in room six,' he said. 'There never have been.'
Keira followed him up the stairs. The burning curtain had shortened by another inch. Behind it, the window showed not the road but a garden in summer, untouched by smoke. Something small and bright moved between the trees.
Her system displayed a new warning. CHECKPOINT INTEGRITY: REDUCED. PROTECTED OCCUPANT: STABLE.
Keira looked at Damon.
'It's not keeping us safe,' she said.
The voice behind the curtain stopped humming.
'Not only you,' it answered.

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
Map the inn and fire progression carefully so repeated runs create accumulating evidence rather than arbitrary resets. Keira's courier habits supply notation, routes and risk assessment. Damon's suppression magic needs measurable limits. The protected occupant can be an emergent adult entity with a childlike voice, avoiding a helpless-child shortcut. Their survival goal must coexist with its own right to exist. The final solution should change checkpoint rules through earned discovery and sacrifice of convenience rather than a free infinite reset.
- Keira notices fire advancing across respawns.
- Damon reveals marks left by forgotten runs.
- A protected occupant survives inside the flames.
- They test which objects persist between resets.
- The courier quest is linked to the inn's original construction.
- A suppression attempt destabilizes the protected garden.
- Keira discovers who profits from failed runs.
- They design one costly nonresetting escape route.
- The party moves the occupant without erasing its world.
- A finite checkpoint replaces the exploitative loop.
