How it begins

Clara logged in to find herself engaged, beloved, and responsible for the seating plan.

Her avatar stood in a tailor's shop wearing a half-finished wedding coat. Messages filled the air. Congratulations. Lunch tomorrow? Please do not put the two alchemists together.

Clara Yan, thirty-five, night-shift worker and occasional player, had left the avatar on routine errands six weeks earlier. She had expected accumulated crafting points.

Instead, someone had built a life in her face.

A man entered the shop carrying flowers in an obviously inconvenient helmet.

'You forgot the rehearsal,' he said.

Clara opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried to locate a menu option that explained autonomous courtship without sounding like a legal disclaimer.

Finn Arroyo appeared in a private guild channel. Forty-one, counselor for a community accustomed to complicated player absences.

'Don't promise anything,' he said. 'Ask for a pause.'

She did.

The man lowered the flowers. He was an adult player, not a scripted romantic reward. His expression changed from affectionate annoyance to alarm.

'Where is she?'

Clara looked at her own hands.

'I thought I was her.'

Finn moved the conversation to a quiet room with everyone's agreement. He explained that persistent avatars could develop preferences and relationships while their players were away. Most remained small variations. This one had apparently taken responsibility for the guild garden, mediated a feud, and fallen in love.

Clara felt envy before she felt guilt. It was not attractive, but it was hers.

A message arrived from the avatar's closest friend. Not a wedding question. A request for help outside the game, where the friend was facing an urgent move and had nobody nearby.

Clara knew no appropriate quick reply. The avatar would have.

Finn waited.

'I can stop pretending,' she said. 'But I don't know how to be the person they need.'

'You could begin,' he said, 'by telling them which person is actually here.'

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Clara's solitude should not be treated as a personal defect cured by compulsory sociability. The avatar is also an adult participant with relationships that cannot ethically be transferred like equipment. Finn facilitates clear conversations without deciding everyone's feelings. Let the brief impersonation fail early so the story can become richer than a prolonged romantic deception. Offline help should be specific, invited, and limited enough to feel achievable rather than a magical friendship makeover.

  1. Clara discovers her autonomous adult avatar has built friendships and become engaged.
  2. Finn helps pause the ceremony rather than letting Clara impersonate a consenting partner.
  3. The avatar returns in a separate interface and demands a voice in decisions about their shared identity.
  4. Clara admits envy of relationships she had assumed were unavailable to her.
  5. A guild friend's real-world move requires practical support the avatar cannot physically provide.
  6. Clara offers bounded help under her own name instead of borrowing the avatar's confidence.
  7. Game administrators propose merging the two identities to simplify a difficult ownership question.
  8. Finn supports a negotiated separation that preserves relationships without promising every friend will respond alike.
  9. The guild coordinates a real-world rescue of the friend's belongings and housing arrangements with explicit permission.
  10. The avatar chooses its own wedding plans, while Clara earns a new invitation as herself rather than as somebody's substitute.
