Murder in the Borrowed Greenhouse
A seed-librarian finds a dead patron inside a greenhouse borrowed for a winter exhibition. A plant flowering at the wrong time tells her which suspect moved the room before the guests arrived.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The red flower should not have opened.
Ada crouched beside it, careful to keep her coat away from the damp tray.
Yesterday the bud had been tight. Felix had shown it to her before they locked the exhibition, explaining that it needed several hours of sustained warmth to flower.
The greenhouse had been cold all night.
According to the thermometer, it still was.
Behind her, somebody dropped a tray of name cards.
She turned.
At the far end of the aisle, the exhibition's principal donor sat in a wicker chair with his head tilted against the glass.
For one foolish moment, Ada thought he was sleeping.
Then Felix reached him and said her name in a voice she had never heard him use.
She called for help.
Later, after the emergency crew had arrived and the doors were closed to visitors, she stood outside with the unopened seed catalog pressed against her chest.
A policeman asked what she had touched.
"The edge of a tray. Nothing else."
"Did anything seem unusual?"
She looked through the glass.
The red flower shone between two blue pots.
"Yes," she said. "But I don't know whether it matters."
He waited.
"This section was on the other side yesterday."
The policeman glanced at the structure.
"It's a greenhouse."
"A hired one. It comes apart."
Through the door she could see the entrance mat, the donors' board, and a heater that had been disconnected before closing.
All where she remembered them.
Only the planting beds had changed places.
Felix joined them, carrying the exhibition plan.
"I've been looking for this," he said.
Ada turned the paper around.
Someone had penciled a new doorway through the warm section.
Beside it were two initials and a time.
The time was an hour before the donor was supposed to have arrived.

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
A modular greenhouse makes the room's movement literal and understandable. Choose a fictional cultivated variety with an established response to warmth rather than claiming any flower proves an exact time of death. Ada's seed-lending records can expose ownership conflicts without granting her access to confidential police material. Give the final reconstruction a visible layout readers can sketch for themselves. Show the original layout before rearranging its parts.
- Ada finds a patron dead in the exhibition greenhouse
- A flowering plant contradicts the stated room temperature
- The greenhouse's modular sections were rearranged before opening
- Felix explains which plants were moved and which remained in their beds
- A rare-seed donation exposes a dispute about ownership
- Ada reconstructs the earlier layout from root trays and catalog photographs
- A suspect claims the victim never entered the warm section
- The bloom and a misplaced sensor establish the true sequence
- Police test the timeline against delivery records and identify the killer
- The seed library honors the donor with a properly documented living collection
Characters
- Ada Marsh, 60. Seed librarian
- Felix Cole, 55. Exhibition gardener
