I Hacked My Guardian Angel

An adult support-class player modifies the protective companion assigned to every citizen. It begins warning her about dangers the system refuses to display. A repair specialist helps her trace those invisible threats to the profitable accidents sustaining their supposedly benevolent city.

How it begins

Freya's guardian angel asked whether she wanted the profitable warning or the useful one.

It hovered above the courier desk, a small mechanical moth with a cracked lime halo. Until yesterday, its advice had consisted of approved routes, hydration reminders, and offers to insure her equipment.

Freya Moss, twenty-nine, support class, had paid Diego Keene to repair a damaged permission layer. Apparently he had repaired its manners too.

'The useful one.'

DO NOT ACCEPT DELIVERY 441.

The job window flashed gold. High reward. Low listed risk. A generous first-completion bonus.

'Why?'

The moth projected a route beneath the window. At a narrow intersection, three previous deliveries ended. Their accident reports were marked SETTLED. Their couriers' names were not visible.

Freya closed the offer before the acceptance timer expired.

Diego answered her call from a workshop beneath the transit deck. Forty-two, companion repair specialist, habitually surrounded by protective avatars waiting for owners who could not afford them.

'What did you change?' she asked.

'I let it show you the warnings it already had.'

'Why weren't they visible?'

'Ask it.'

The moth's halo flickered.

RISK NOT COVERED BY YOUR PROTECTION TIER.

Freya looked at the word protection until it stopped resembling a promise. Her city assigned every citizen a guardian. It had never promised they all guarded against the same things.

Outside the courier window, another player accepted Delivery 441. A young adult with a new badge and a relieved expression.

Freya stepped away from her desk.

'Wait. There's something missing from that route.'

Her guardian moved between them. For one dreadful moment she thought it would enforce the restriction.

Instead it opened a second warning.

YOUR SUPPORT CLASS MAY SHARE THIS INFORMATION. COST: ALL PENDING BONUS CREDIT.

Freya thought about the rent due tomorrow. Then she selected SHARE.

For the first time all week, the moth's halo became a complete circle.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep this a fictional game-city system rather than an operational hacking tutorial. Freya's support class needs legible costs, new capabilities, and progression earned through decisions. Diego repairs a permission layer without becoming a wizard who can rewrite everything. The moth should have interests beyond serving as a perfect exposition device. The story's criticism targets concealed incentives, while its hopeful ending makes information and choice more available without promising a city free of danger.

  1. Freya's repaired companion reveals risks excluded from her protection tier.
  2. Diego explains that the warnings existed before the modification but were commercially hidden.
  3. Freya spends a valuable bonus to warn another adult courier.
  4. Support progression unlocks shared risk interpretation rather than a stronger attack.
  5. The pair find a pattern of profitable accidents concentrated among lower-tier workers.
  6. A city offer would restore Freya's credit if she accepts a premium guardian and stops sharing.
  7. The moth develops its own limits and refuses to become a surveillance tool against every citizen.
  8. Courier groups compare voluntarily contributed evidence while protecting identities.
  9. Freya uses a public contract review to demonstrate the gap between advertised protection and actual incentives.
  10. The guardian network gains transparent warnings, and Freya chooses a support role defined by cooperation rather than purchased obedience.
Characters
  • Freya Moss, 29. Support-class player and courier
  • Diego Keene, 42. Companion repair specialist
Series possibilities
  • Freya and her guardian explore other supposedly helpful city mechanics whose incentives reward the wrong outcomes.

Make it your kind of story.
