A Bet Between Bookmarks
A bookseller and a library campaigner compete to get one reluctant reader through a novel, unaware he is quietly rewriting both their endings.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Molly knew the man outside her bookshop was trouble because he was carrying a petition and using her window as a clipboard.
"That's an original print," she said.
Jack Turner lifted the paper.
"Sorry."
"It says please do not lean on the glass."
"I was reading the other sign."
Her other sign said that a town without a bookshop was a town without a place to change its mind.
His petition proposed moving the library into a retail development beyond walking distance.
They had already changed their minds about each other.
"You could sign," he said.
"I could also close the shop and take up arson. Neither is on today's list."
A customer behind her cleared his throat.
Mr. Bell had been coming in every Thursday for eight years. He bought greeting cards, checked the weather and refused every novel Molly recommended.
"I'll read one," he said.
They both turned.
"If you two can agree which."
Molly looked at Jack.
Jack looked at the shelves.
The possibility of victory did something unfortunate to both their expressions.
"One book," Molly said.
"One month," Jack added.
"No improving me," Mr. Bell said.
Molly returned the novel she had already selected.
Jack put away a book about civic responsibility.
For the first time, Mr. Bell looked interested.
He walked past the new releases toward a slim, unmarked volume on the local shelf.
Molly frowned.
She did not remember ordering it.
Inside the cover was a handwritten dedication.
For the two people arguing about places to read.
Mr. Bell smiled.
"I thought we'd start with this."
Jack opened to the first page.
The first sentence described a bookseller, a librarian and a bet neither of them understood.
Molly checked the author's name.
There wasn't one.
Outside, the petition slipped from Jack's hand and tapped against the glass.
This time, neither of them noticed.
